The mission of Stepping Out Stepping In (SOSI) is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and adults by providing opportunities to connect with nature through environmental education, exploration, and eco-therapy programs.
Stepping Out Stepping In (SOSI) was founded in 2011 by Tara Reinertson, a long time Naturalist of the Bay Area and also a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. SOSI offers quality environmental education programs to school groups at east bay parks and eco-therapy groups for adolescents.
SOSI believes that every child deserves to grow up with an array of experiences to enrich their sense of the world and themselves. Our hands-on environmental education programs are designed to meet science and California history state standards. Our programs focus on the ecology and cultural history of the San Francisco Bay-Estuary. Many of our naturalist programs take place at Middle Harbor Shoreline Park. The Port of Oakland helps support the cost of of these programs by funding transportation for all OUSD schools and by supporting all program fees and bus funding for Title 1 OUSD Schools (funding is limited each season, please apply early). We are proud to help connect bay area communities to this wonderful waterfront park. Students will come away with a greater sense of their connection to the San Francisco Bay, the Port of Oakland and gain a sense of stewardship as they help restore habitats and cleanup shoreline beaches.
