RESTORING THE BAY! Middle School & High School Program
Pre-Trip Visit:
Our naturalist presentation in your classroom will give your students a perspective of the importance of wetlands and how they as individuals can improve their local environments through service. Your students will learn about the unique wetland native plants and how they are important to help clean water and provide buffers to rising tides and storm surges. Through an interactive activity where students will build a watershed using a clay model, your students will understand the concept of a "watershed" and how pollution runs into the San Francisco Bay and how plants can help filter and clean urban runoff.
Field Trip:
In this hands-on program, your students will help contribute to the restoration of the unique San Francisco Bay habitats by removing invasive species and planting native seeds or seedlings at Middle Harbor Shoreline Park. This service learning opportunity is essential to generating genuine engagement in land stewardship. The main goal of this restoration program is to understand the benefits and functions of non-native species removal in wetland habitats while empowering students to gain ownership in their environments to promote the overall health of the SF Bay. Literacy in the form of vocabulary terms is used as a strategy to develop a connection between words and action.
